Nature of Human Resource Management

Human Resource Management brings organizations and people together so that the goals of each are met. The nature of HRM includes:
  1. Broader function
    Human Resource Management is a comprehensive function because it is about managing people in the organization. It covers all types of people in the organization from workers till the top level management.

  2. People oriented
    Human resource is the core of all the processes of human resource management. So HRM is the process which brings people and organizations together so that their goals can be achieved.
  3.  Action oriented
    Human resource management believes in taking actions in order to achieve individual and organizational goals rather than just keeping records and procedures.
  4.  Development oriented
    Development of employees is an essential function of human resource management in order to get maximum satisfaction from their work so that they give their best to the organization.
  5. Continuous function
    As human resource is a living factor among all factors of production therefore it requires continuous improvement and innovations in order to get excellence. So it requires a constant alertness and awareness of human relations and there importance in every day to day operations.
  6. Future oriented
    HRM is very important activity which helps organization to achieve its objectives in future by providing well motivated and competent employees.

What is Human Resource Management?

Human resource management constitutes of two major terms.
  1. Human resource
  2. Management
 
Therefore firstly it becomes necessary to understand these terms.
  1. Concept of Human Resource
    HR simply means people at work. An organization cannot exist without human resource. Organization can become successful by employing right number of people and right kind of people working at right place. Organization constitutes four important M's i.e. Men, Money, Materials and Machinery which are most significant resource of any organization. Men is the only living resource among all resources therefore it can also be considered as active factor of production. Human resource co-ordinates, collects and utilizes money, material and machines. Among all resources manpower is the only resource which does not depreciate with time and is called human resource.
    For a nation human resource can be viewed as the knowledge, skills, creative abilities and talents of the nations population. For the organization human resource represents people working in that organization, it refers to knowledge, skills, creative abilities and talent of the employees.
  2. Concept of Management
    Management is a new discipline, it has drawn its concepts and principles from a number of disciplines such as, psychology, economics, sociology and anthropology, statistics etc. Therefore as a result of this contributors from different disciplines has treated management differently, for example economists considers it as factor of production, for sociologists management is class or group of persons and for practitioners it is a process comprising of different activities.

Concept of Human Resource Management

Human resource management means management of people at work. HRM is the process which binds people with organizations and helps both people and organization to achieve each others goal. Various policies, processes and practices are designed to help both employees and organization’s to achieve their goal.

Human resource management is branch of management that deals with people at work, it is concerned with the human dimensions of management of the organization. As organization consists of people, therefore acquiring them, developing their skills, providing them motivation in order to attain higher goal and ensuring that the level of commitment is maintained are the important activities.
Human resource constitutes of all the management decisions responsible for relationship between organization and employees.

HRM is the field of management which plans, organizes, controls the functions of procurement, development, maintenance and utilization of the work force so that.
  1. Organization goals can be accomplished.
  2. Objectives of human resources can be accomplished
  3. Objectives of society can be accomplished.

According to Flippo, Human Resource Management is:
"The planning, organizing, directing and controlling of the procurement, development, compensation, integration, maintenance and reproduction of human resources to the end that individual, organizational and societal objectives are accomplished"
Human resource management can be concluded as a business oriented philosophy concerned with the management of people in order to obtain added value from them and achieve competitive advantage.
